YMCA Day Camp

Engaging Youth in Learning and Development

For the first time in 13 years, a day camp was offered to River Valley youth. The YMCA Day Camp has garnered positive feedback as its inaugural year concluded, successfully engaging over 30 campers aged 8-11 at Mountain Valley High School. Under the direction of Camp Director Melissa Porter, the program emphasizes not only enjoyable activities but also essential life skills.

Emphasis on Fun and Life Skills

“This program extends beyond recreational activities; we emphasize responsibility, respect, and safety,” Porter stated. The children have benefited from a food program providing daily breakfast and lunch, while also forming new friendships.

Outdoor Exploration and Activities

Collaborating with Regional School Unit 10, the camp facilitates transportation for weekly field trips. Daily activities include outdoor exploration along the Inland Woods + Trails, arts and crafts, and various sports, ensuring an engaging experience for campers.

Social Development and Conflict Resolution

Counselors, all Mountain Valley graduates, ensure the program aligns with campers’ interests. Activities like gaga ball promote social skills and conflict resolution, encouraging campers to develop effective problem-solving strategies.

Community Collaboration

The camp’s success is a result of collaboration with various local organizations, including a grant from FRV, allowing full funding for all participants who qualify. Weekly field trips to the YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston provide enriching experiences, including archery and swimming.

Commitment to Youth Development

Porter, who modeled the camp after the successful Auburn-Lewiston program, expressed gratitude for the support received. The YMCA Day Camp cultivates responsible, engaged youth, preparing them for future challenges.
